Recap and photos by Curt Baran
The Boston duo Dresden Dolls decided to celebrate their 25 years together in a very unique way. They chose to revisit their past. Their two-decade relationship with their record label recently came to a close, giving them more flexibility with the music they’ve already created. So, they took their lead from the Taylor Swift playbook and chose to re-record their 2006 release Yes, Virginia…, with the idea that twenty years of experience can bring something new to what is arguably a career-high recording.
They’ve also taken those results on the road, and that tour brought them to Chicago’s Salt Shed earlier this week.
Drawing heavily from said release, Amanda Palmer (keyboards/vocals) and Brian Viglione (drummer/multi-instrumentalist) bounded onto the stage adorned in their now instantly recognizable “punk cabaret” personas, a wink to 1920s German nightlife (with a foot deeply steeped in modern-day Goth). For twenty-something songs, the duo pounded away on their instruments, balancing passion, humor, loud outbursts, and whispering interludes.
It proved you can sometimes go back home, even if that destination comes with renovations.
