Noah Kahan, Pearl Jam, Chappell Roan, and more than three decades of elapsed time share a commonality: they were all booked to perform at Lollapalooza. Between signing up and hitting the stage, their popularity skyrocketed, leading to massive crowds arriving for their sets on stages that couldn’t accommodate them.
Fast forward to today, and Noah Kahan finally has access to venues that match his ticket sales. On a scorching summer night, he took the stage at Chicago’s massive Wrigley Field for the first of two sold-out nights, a trend that has been consistent throughout his “Great Divide” tour.
“Who wants to get miserable with me?!!” he playfully exclaimed, winking at the subject matter of his songs, which was a stark contrast to the upbeat and celebratory atmosphere. Despite releasing only two albums, Kahan’s star has risen rapidly. His unique blend of rock, country, and back porch bluegrass has resonated with a massive audience, and they showed up in droves. For nearly two hours, they eagerly listened to every word, seemingly oblivious to the oppressive heat and humidity. Even with the larger venues, there was still an air of exclusivity. Tickets sold out instantly and, when found on secondary markets, were outrageously priced, making them inaccessible to most.
Those who managed to get in celebrated by exhausting themselves completely. Those who missed out were left wondering about the additional stadium tours that would follow.
