Slow Learner
In Their Time They Are Magnificent
(self-released)

Greg Dulli friend and Ani DiFranco beau Mike Napolitano bows as Slow Learner.

Reflecting little of his more notorious compadres, Napolitano’s full-length debut as Slow Learner is a slow burn of funereal dirges and droney folk debating “living in the past/even though I’ve got no time to” (“White Walls”) and hymn-like deconstructions of tradition (“The Better The Lonely”). A little like Pedro The Lion venturing into TV On The Radio’s raspy soul territory, *In Their Time They Were Magnificent is consistently stark if a little stuck in middle gear. Frustrations like these often fireball, yet here they don’t.
