The Del McCoury Band
The Promised Land
(McCoury Music)

Bluegrass hero Del McCoury follows his Grammy win with his first gospel hybrid.

Mercifully free of overbearing gospel clichés, The Promised Land takes dirt roads across God’s land, seeking salvation, praising the name, but never preaching. Musically, McCoury and band (fiddler Jason Carter, bassist Alan Bartram, and sons Rob and Ronnie McCoury on banjo and mandolin) remain accomplished and sort arrangement duties admirably, though there aren’t many details to match the lyrical rejoice. Anyone expecting the gravity Johnny Cash delivers in this vein will be disappointed; McCoury follows his own lead, and there’s no denying he has found a good path.
