Paulette Carlson returns

Paulette Carlson
It’s About Time
(Pandean)

Try as she might, Paulette Carlson’s life is shackled to Highway 101.

As the vocalist for the ’80s country rock standbys, Carlson found more acceptance than she could as a solo act before or after her tenure with 101 (she left the group but was eventually reeled in by the reunion tour). As talented a writer as she is a singer, Carlson’s fate is she’s tops at neither. Prone to cliche and utterly without ambition, It’s About Time rolls past without acknowledgement of context, as in there are hundreds of country albums paying tribute to the same lyrical and musical themes anually. A little steel guitar here, a gospel-ish chorus here (“Only In Your Dreams”), and voila: a country album.
