They obviously know who Afrika Bambaataa was, but Spank Rock and “Planet Rock” are light years apart.

Smashing the socially aware attribute of wildly inventive, underground hip-hop against the wall, Spank Rock embrace dirty sex like Prince dry-humping your couch with OutKast on repeat. Either MC Spank Rock himself and XXXchange are so insecure they think they need consummate slut tale “Backyard Betty” to draw people in, or they’re so secure they let Amanda Blank rub her unmentionables for a verse on “Bump,” knowing aficionados will stick to the 2 Live beat.

At any rate, a lot of so-called “serious” hip-hop fans will find themselves on the fence, justifying away how they can jive with YoYoYoYoYo (Big Dada) and cry foul every time D4L get up in some Laffy Taffy. Even without the lyrics, “Coke Wet” has hophead old school flavor, dipping into brokeass funk. Is it juvenile? Yes. Demeaning? Yes. Real? Thank god, yes.

Kid Sister and Rik Shaw open.
