Recap and photos by Jeff Elbel
New Wave pioneers Devo brought their Celebrating 50 Years of De-Evolution Tour to a full house of spuds and energy-domed mutants at the Riviera Theatre on Saturday. The career-spanning set list was packed with crowd favorites. Singer and synthesizer player Mark Mothersbaugh led songs, including the de facto theme song “Jocko Homo” and “Freedom of Choice.” Bassist and singer Gerald Casale led songs including “Mongoloid” and traded vocals with Mothersbaugh on the band’s indelible hit “Whip It.” Lead guitarist Bob Mothersbaugh sang the band’s heavily retooled cover of P.F. Sloan’s “Secret Agent Man” and shared vocal duties on “Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA” while mercilessly abusing his guitar. The band donned its signature yellow hazmat suits for Devo’s off-kilter interpretation of the Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction,” and soon afterward, Mothersbaugh tore the suits to shreds while singing “Uncontrollable Urge.” “Peek-a-Boo!,” “Girl U Want,” “Gates of Steel,” and the band’s self-made and subversive videos were additional highlights.
