Land Of Talk
Some Are Lakes
(Saddle Creek)

After changing some members, this Montreal-based quartet takes its foot off the pedal following a caustic debut EP — and its eyes off the road.

Appearing: Thursday, October 9th at Vic Theatre in Chicago.

The tale of this full-length debut is “Give Me Back My Heart Attack,” a frantically strummed post punk frenzy, with Elizabeth Powell’s desperately fluttering voice barely hanging on. It’s also a potential rallying cry for the EP’s fans, who might wonder where the rest of this midtempo ho-humness came from. Powell doesn’t reveal herself to be much of a lyricist (“Maybe when I die/I get to be a car driving in the night”), and as the tempos lag so does her distinctive delivery. “Young Bridge” and “Corner Phone” manage to stand out, but they’ve been cast in the same mold as “Heart Attack.” Right now Land Of Talk only has one gear that works, and its wearing the whole machine down.
