Azita CD Review

Azita
Detail From The Mountain Side
(Drag City)

This ultra-quick EP is a companion to Chicago playwright Brian Torrey Scott’s musical of the same name.

For all the attention Azita Youssefi’s rubbery voice gets on her recordings, the story on this “soundtrack” is her sublime piano work. On an EP where “Intro” is the second-longest track, she never really has the time to gather steam and reach the fringes (though “Evaporation” comes close), and one really has to wonder how much impact the script/production had on her offerings, because these songlets — lyrics by Scott, music by Azita — sound like no one else but her.
