Forty years ago, prog pioneer Chris Squire teamed with Steve Nardelli to form The Syn, an innovative ensemble that paved the way for such well-known acts as Yes (cofounded by Squire in 1968), Asia, and Genesis. The Syn quickly disbanded, but reunited late last year, and it’s clear they haven’t lost their touch on Syndestructible (Umbrello).

“City Of Dreams” is far and away the disc’s best number, a multi-movement work showcasing gorgeous piano and warm lyrics. The tune recalls the best of Yes — especially within the central section — yet at the same time retains enough originality to remain relevant. “Golden Age” is similarly evocative, with wonderful references to an ancient king and Valhalla, even as the collection’s culminating cut, a 13-minute-plus showstopper titled “The Promise,” is a multilayered magnum opus spotlighting heartfelt harmonies, impressive guitar handiwork, and cathedral-size keyboards. There’s admittedly a pretentious musical moment or two, but overall it’s a recording long-time prog rockers should find Synfully sweet.
