Tyler Childers has mastered the art of the crossover, and it seems he’s achieved it one fan at a time.
In the past, the Kentucky native would perform in front of hundreds of people. However, with each subsequent visit, the venues grew larger, and the sellouts came quicker. His blend of folk, country, and bluegrass had enough credibility to attract lifelong fans. But it was his sharp songwriting and singalong melodies that eventually reached a considerably larger audience.
How much bigger? Well, on a perfect summer evening, Childers found himself standing in center field at Chicago’s historic Wrigley Field, once again facing a sold-out audience over 40,000 fans. From the first notes of his opening song, “Eatin’ Big Time,” the faithful audience immediately took their vocal cords for a test drive.
Every available space on the massive stage seemed packed with not only musicians but also instruments. At the center of this auditory spectacle stood Childers, exuding a mix of bewilderment and confidence. He was secure in the knowledge that his immense talent was worthy of such adoration, yet somehow still bemused by the extent of his success.
By the time he moved to a smaller B-Stage, somewhere out where second base would normally reside, Childers had already won the night. By the end of the evening, he had performed nearly two dozen songs, transforming the cavernous feel of the Friendly Confines into the intimate setting of a dusty, roadside beer joint. Fortunately for the outfield ivy, now in full bloom, it was spared the indignity of sawdust and spilled beer—or at least, just the sawdust.
