Queens Of The Stone Age

Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island

Recap and photos by Curt Baran

Back in 2000, singer/guitarist Josh Homme probably had no idea that his Queens Of The Stone Age record, Rated R, would somehow build a bridge between metalheads and alternative rock kids. But its mix of heaviness, groove, and general weirdness proved to be the perfect combination to sate the cravings of both camps.

Two-plus decades later and that concoction is still going strong. Under the Queens moniker (Homme being the only consistent member), the band has been a revolving door of personnel, specifically designed to meet the musical whims of its namesake’s overlord. After an injury sidelined the “In Times New Roman” tour back in 2023, the now healed frontman is back at it, hitting the boards on an impossibly windy and scorching hot evening on Chicago’s lakefront. Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island served as the backdrop to a set filled with a career-spanning seventeen songs executed with barely a breath spared in between. Unlike the weather, which seemed to overheat some in attendance, the music at least offered sweet relief for the soul. The sweat-soaked clothing of band and fans alike would, unfortunately, not receive any similar mercy
