If you’re a musician with hereditary links to the dark poet Edgar Allen Poe, it would be safe to assume your music would have gothic leanings. Well, the music the Lovell sisters create certainly has DNA lineage, but it’s regional in nature as opposed to their family tree.
Hailing from Calhoun, Georgia, the duo, known as Larkin Poe (again, referencing their heritage), baptized themselves in the aesthetic of deep blues and rock, heavily influenced by forebears like The Allman Brothers Band and swampy gospel. They even bagged themselves a Grammy with their heralded 2023 Blood Harmony album.
Fast forward to the present where the duo find themselves on the road in support of 2025’s Bloom record, and a tour that brought them to Chicago’s Vic Theatre.
What became immediately apparent during the set opening “Nowhere Fast” is the absolute joy the siblings exude during their live sets. Rebecca Lovell simply beamed as she took her beloved Stratocaster through its paces. During “Summertime,” she leaned into her sister Megan, who met her ringing guitar tones with sliding flashes from a lap steel guitar that is outfitted with a strap to help afford her maximum mobility.
Throughout their 90 minute set, the duo flashed countless moments of adrenaline fueled execution, massive riffs and songwriting chops to no end. But none of those assets were ever topped by their two, 1000-watt smiles.
