Recap and photos by Curt Baran
Five years used to be an eternity in the music industry. Post-COVID (at least at its peak), it now feels like nary a blip. Like everyone else in the business, Tori Amos had to postpone her “Ocean To Ocean” tour due to the pandemic. So it’s not surprising that after half a decade away from the road, she was greeted with an uproarious welcome when she took the stage at Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre as part of a 34 date tour of the U.S.
Her siren-like voice sounded as glass cutting sharp as ever in the acoustically glorious house that Louis Sullivan built. Adorned in a silken pantsuit and oversized glasses, Amos projected the vibe of a mousy librarian, but once she straddled her piano bench and proceeded to pound away on two instruments at once, no amount of amethyst crystal stroking could quell her intensity. At one point during her performance, she even propped a foot up on the ivories, a la Jerry Lee Lewis. Pretty sure, however, “The Killer” never pulled off his signature move while repping a three-inch stiletto heel.
