Stage Buzz: Slightly Stoopid

| March 8, 2013

Slightly Stoopids favorite color is green. How apropos then that the SoCal outfit rolls into town on the eve of the South Side Irish St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Just don’t expect Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald to invite curly-haired dancers covered in decorative Celtic knots to the party. See, instead of donning the hue, they prefer to burn it. On last August’s 21-song opus, Top Of The World, the band teamed up with reggae legend Don Carlos for a Latin-seasoned ode to the controversial plant. “Marijuana” blithely reimagines a slacker’s hobby as an inescapable femme fatale. Guests and genres abound on the Ocean Beach stalwarts’ seventh full-length. G. Love‘s cruisin’ mouth harp does for “Hiphoppablues” what Joe Perry’s talk box intro did for Aerosmith’s “Sweet Emotion.” Jurassic 5 founder Chali 2na delivers a menacing dose that unhinges the wave pool bopping of “Just Thinking.” Fishbone‘s Angelo Moore turns a lively “Ska Diddy” into a ska square dance replete with swinging horns and a city-centric caller. Ace saxophonist and flutist Karl Denson joins the muscular lineup for this run of dates before heading out with The Greyboy Allstars. (Saturday@Congress.)
