The Sleeping
Questions & Answers
(Victory)

Useless guitar fills and solos aside, intense Long Island band has it together on its second album.

Maybe the appeal of Doug Robinson’s voice is purely a Chicago delicacy — at full throttle he’s a cinch for Rise Against’s Tim McIlrath — but he carries The Sleeping’s Victory debut more often than not. Drummer Joe Zizzo and bassist Salvatore Mignano manage slow and fast tempos admirably, but guitarist Cameron Keym often comes across bored or completely at the wrong rehearsal. “Heart Beatz” occasionally sounds like the many faces of Extreme’s Nuno Bettencourt, but then Keym will be back in form on the ensuing post hardcore of “The Climb.” His Edge-like tendencies sidetrack *Questions & Answers* too often; what could be range is frequently off-color and out of focus.
