Chevreuil CD Review
Chevreuil
Capoeria
(Sick Room)
Chaotic French “duo” — three instruments — Chevreuil lumber through Don Caballero-esque instrumentals, hearing footsteps throughout.
There are points within Capoeria, such as “Breakdance,” when the stops stop stopping and the mess of organ and hammer-on guitar parts conjoin with the drums for some propulsive post rock (tell your kids such a thing existed). But there are others when Chevreuil pull out, detune, and throw the proverbial wrench in just to maybe point out they’re not as good as they are. Bullshit. Times are too many on Capoeria when dissonance and rhythmic breakdowns feel like cop outs, where a little effort might have built a bridge instead of sending one crumbling into the river. False starts (“Chanteur De Charme”) are a dime a dozen in these parts, all acting on some sort of imaginary code, no doubt.
