Vic theater
The cover portrait on Lambchop‘s Mr. M (Merge) is not Vic Chesnutt (Chesnutt, for one, did not own such a hat), and he is not mentioned at anytime during the album. But the songwriter’s death is its centerpiece, and it captures with grace Chesnutt’s difficult but rewarding (for us, at least) existence.
Kaiser Chiefs live!
Shortly after the Kaiser Chiefs opened their concert at House of Blues last Thursday, vocalist Ricky Wilson offered a cheeky introduction for the first single from the bandâs latest release by declaring, âItâs new, itâs brilliant, and itâs called âOn The Run.ââ
After the binge
Once you’re through sullying the holiness of Record Store Day by celebrating its more consumerist aspects, Brendan Kelly, Modeselektor, Ed Sheeran, Serge Devant, and Anya Marina will throw their arms around you and try to get you in the door.
Record Store Day is Saturday!
Is your favorite record store participating? Head to recordstoreday.com/Venues to find out for sure, and be sure to call ahead in case they want to reveal what special items they’ll have in stock, and a good chunk of them will have food, in-store performances, discounts and food!
Anais Mitchell & Nick Lowe preview
The singer/songwriter profession requires an arrogance that says you’re the best person to sing your songs. Society has followed suit, forging a divide among all fans where an artist’s worth often hinges on whether one writes their own material.
Live From Daryl’s House . . . live!
What originally started as an under-the-radar webcast in 2007, has since evolved into an MTV Award-winning syndicated TV show and subsequent seven-city tour. Enter âLive From Darylâs House,â the seemingly out-of-the-blue reinvention by Daryl Hall
International Pop Overthrow returns!
International Pop Overthrow returns to Chicago on April 19th and will run through the 28th at Red Line Tap. Each night will showcase at least six power pop or indie rock bands, with additional daytime showcases on
Zip it good . . . zip it real good!
In an interview, presidential hopeful Mitt Romney tells President Obama to “start packing.” Romney, after all, has been on the road since last fall, and wants Mr. Obama to be prepared for a grueling tour. Also on the road this week? For All I Am, Trust, Bear In Heaven with Doldrums, and Tanlines.
Company Flow live
Itâs baffling that Company Flowâs first-ever Chicago show happened just now in 2012. Sure this NYC-based trio disbanded years ago, but they were only one of the most influential independent hip-hop groups of the mid-to-late-’90s.
It’s reining men
The forecast calls for precipitation this weekend, and also for a bunch of dudes to come to town. We spotlight Howlin’ Rain (natch), Good Old War, Bassnectar, and Fun.
Gotye & Kimbra live!
Gotye managed to jump from the Park West to the Aragon Ballroom without playing a single note in Chicago. This impressive leap probably irked the Belgian Aussieâs handful of devotees and those taking pride in unearthing the undiscovered gem.
Oh, unlucky 13!
Do we put extra stock in a month that has both an April Fool’s Day and a Friday the 13th? Is Halloween a better companion to the fated date? Who cares? Ceremony, Trampled By Turtles, In Solitude, and The Lumineers walk under ladders this Friday.
Jersey more!
While the initial appeal of âJersey Boysâ may be a soundtrack-ripe golden oldies like âSherry,â âBig Girls Donât Cry,â âWalk Like A Man,â âOh What A Night,â and âCanât Take My Eyes Off You,â thereâs actually plenty of surprises
March into spring!
My neighbor’s testing a new lawn mower. Some friends’ mother was complaining that our property looks drab without new mulch. Our wife wants outside seating at the restaurant. It’s still March, dangit! Ben Kweller, Cheers Elephant, Beak, and Needtobreathe know; Joe Budden and Kasabian represent the summery future.
