Bombast. That’s what Muse delivered when their “The WOW! Signal Tour” touched down in Tinley Park on a perfect summer evening to hear live music outdoors.

Every available inch of the stage seemed to be stacked with fog machines, lasers, amps, electrical cords, distortion pedals, and crates of clothing available for ample costume changes. The English trio (aided by a touring member, Dan Lancaster) could have chosen not to play a note, and the spectacle alone would have sufficed. But after launching into their set-opening song (“Interlude”), there was no doubt that they brought along a Progressive Rock soundtrack that would actually eclipse the sight-and-sound orgy that would, for twenty-three songs, now become incredibly effective aesthetic window dressing.

Lead singer/guitarist Matt Bellamy proved to be the evening’s centerpiece, using the entirety of the stage for over-the-top guitar solos, perfectly executed rock star poses and vocalizations that shifted from falsetto crooning to histrionic overreach, sometimes within seconds of each other. Of course, each grand gesture was not only greeted with absolute glee by those in attendance, it was also amplified by whatever lighting cues their art direction team could conjure up from the vastness of their seemingly unlimited imaginations.

It was an evening showcasing the egregious use of technology and overstimulation, with not a whiff of irony. And its intent was overtly intentional, a symbolic nod to a time so overrun with technological saturation that an obliteration of the senses now simply passed off as a Friday night on the town.
