Consummate road dogs Volbeat and Halestorm arrived at Tinley Park’s Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre to wrap up what has essentially amounted to a co-headlining trek through North America.
Both bands straddle a sort of netherworld between the genres of Heavy Metal and Pop-infused Metal. Whatever you wish to label it as, it became immediately apparent that both bands have deeply devoted fan bases seeking that exact recipe.
Halestorm released their sixth album, Everest, earlier this month, and drew generously from it as part of an energetic set that centered around Lzzy Hale’s searing, songbird vocals and humongous, meticulously sculpted backbeats courtesy of her brother, drummer Arejay Hale, Songs like “Everest,” “Freak Like Me,” “I Get Off” and “Love Bites (So Do I)” all became joyous singalongs, reminiscent of the kinds of compositions that get played on car stereos full blast with the top down on perfect summer nights.
Copenhagen’s Volbeat certainly stomped a similar path to Halestorm’s aesthetic blueprint. Although they arguably bring a bit more of the “heaviness,” the Danish quartet still managed to maintain an undercurrent of melody, even when their voluminous cacophony washed out the surface of their songs. And not unlike their tour mates, Volbeat had a mighty throng of devotees hanging on every note, bar chord, and cymbal crash. Succinctly put, it was an evening of music ideal for warm summer nights, and man, did this tour, on this night, serve up a picture-perfect version of that landscape.
