Stage Buzz: Wednesday 13, Machine Head, Unto Others, Vintage Blonde
For the past two decades, Wednesday 13 aka The Duke of Spook has been serving up spooky tricks and ghostly gags with his brand of horrorpunk. Now, the rocker is looking back on his horrific career on the “There’s No Such Things as Monsters” tour, which celebrates 20 years of his debut album, Transylvania 90210, and his band The Murderdolls. Wednesday 13 will bring his bag tricks and treats to The Forge in Joliet, IL on Tuesday, April 29th at 7 PM. Grab tickets here.
Unto Others is the best gothic metal band you’re not listening to. The Oregon band sounds like Iron Maiden mixed with Sisters of Mercy with a sprinkle of The Cure, and a dash of Killing Joke. They blend elements of punk rock, metal, goth, and post rock for a sound that’s heavy, gloomy, doom leaden, yet fantastical. Catch Unto Others supporting Tribulation at Reggie’s on Thursday, May 1st at 7:30 PM. Tickets still available.
Machine Head remains of the most influential bands in metal. Their ferocious riffs, punishing grooves, and infectious hooks continue to thrill critics and fans alike three decades into their career. Their latest album, UNATØNED, is a testament to their sheer power and brutal sound. Machine Head performs at Radius with In Flames and special guest Lacuna Coil and Unearth this Saturday, May 3rd at 6 PM. Find tickets here.
Chicago’s Vintage Blonde blueprints their punk and rock originals from women powered vintage bands from The Slits and Poison Girls to L7. Rough around the edges at times, they make up the difference with earnestness and passion. Afterlife is especially notable as it was one of Steve Albini’s last engineered projects at Electrical Audio before his untimely and tragic passing. In true Albini audio style “the band worked with him to capture a live, raw, authentic performance sound in a single recorded playthrough using analogue tape and limited overdubs.” VB album release party arrives at Schubas Chicago on Sunday, May 4. Grab your tickets here.
