Final tours in rock and roll are the equivalent of deaths in science fiction. Are they really dead? Well, Deap Vally seems pretty convincing that this is their last go-round. The L.A. duo consisting of Lindsey Troy (guitar, vocals ) and Julie Edwards (drums, vocals) is one of countless bands that can no longer sustain the business model for a band at their level of success (or lack thereof). So the duo brought their farewell tour to Chicago’s Thalia Hall this Saturday. It also coincides with the 10th anniversary of their Sistrionix album, which was performed in its entirety.

If Deap Vally is Icarus flying too close to the sun, openers Sloppy Jane is the Phoenix rising from the flame. The Brooklyn collective, fronted by Haley Dahl, has its genesis as a gaggle of art house provocateurs but has since metamorphosized into an actual band. And still, with nothing but potential ahead of them, Dahl mentioned at one point during their hypnotic performance, “We have a long trip ahead of us tonight. Please consider buying some merch to help us get there.” Even with success in sight, perhaps the past is still nothing but a prologue.
