Recap and photos by Curt Baran

Multiple generations flocked to Tinley Park this weekend for all the Metal they could handle. The Freaks On Parade tour fulfilled its promise of evil clowns, an undead ring leader, video screen (over) stimulation, and, of course, deafening music. Rob Zombie essentially brought one of his horror films down from the big screen and placed it on the stage of the Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre. Of course, none of this would have been possible if not for the antics of the artist that preceded him. Playing before him on that same evening was Alice Cooper, the man who, arguably, helped to invent the rock-show-as-spectacle genre. During the course of his set, he played the role of anti-hero and psych ward patient. He would also get (simulated, of course) hit by a cattle prod while wearing a straight jacket, dance with a ghost, and, ultimately, be beheaded by a guillotine. The student in Zombie may have outsized his teacher in volume and scale, but there was no doubt he appreciated the crypt door that had previously been kicked open for him to walk through.
