Two heavyweights of the late ’80s and ’90s Alt-Rock music scenes joined forces for one of this summer’s more intriguing tours. Hailing from opposite coasts of the country, Pixies (East) and Modest Mouse (West) seemingly have very little in common, at least aesthetically. But there’s a, for lack of a better word, weirdness they certainly both share. Both bands grew their audiences slowly, even though neither could be considered mainstream. But in spite of that, it was precisely that outsider approach that continued to pull in the ears of more adventurous listeners.
They both remain relevant to this day, releasing new music on a semi-regular basis, but it was still somewhat shocking to see the size of the sold-out audience that greeted them on the first of two nights. The evening also proved to have magical, celestial overtones. As if an evening of spectacular music outdoors in the waning days of summer wasn’t enough, concertgoers were blessed by the kiss of moonlight from a rare, blue supermoon that slowly climbed the city’s majestic skyline, making for a spectacular backdrop that was only accentuated by the satisfying soundtrack.
