Stage Buzz: Night Demon at Reggies • Chicago
The band did spend time in Chicago in 2020 recording their 7’ single “Are You Out There,” with a cover of Thin Lizzy’s “The Sun Goes Down” on the flip side. The recording took place with acclaimed producer and engineer (Nirvana, Pixies, PJ Harvey) Steve Albini at Electrical Audio.
IE asked Jarvis about how it was working with Albini. “Recording with Albini was just something we always wanted to do. In 2020 we had a plan to release five different 7″ singles. One every 5 weeks. We felt the songs we had were not cohesive enough for a full-length record, so the idea of recording a single weekly was born. We put together a list of our top 10 bucket list producers and started there. Albini was high on that list. We had already recorded some of the singles with Matt Hyde in LA and Flemming Rassmussen in Denmark. Cirith Ungol (another band I manage) was playing a one-off at Reggie’s in 2019, so we phoned up Albini to see if we could get in for a day and track a song. It was a really professional endeavor. He literally sees himself as an audio engineer who just goes to work every day to capture the sound of the band recording in front of him. He doesn’t see himself as a producer. In fact, there was one time during the session when I asked his opinion on a choice of musical note in a guitar solo, and he actually refused to give his input. Saying something along the lines of … ‘it’s your song. You need to make that decision.’ You can also hear “Are You Out There” on the Year of the Demon compilation album that dropped last year, which includes all of the 2020 singles.”
