Even by Chicago standards, this Spring has been a series of whiplash inducing temperature swings. So it seemed almost compassionate that Ma Nature would save some of her finest work for the opening of the outdoor concert season. How appropriate then that this weather was the backdrop for Florence + The Machine. Considering she’s always rocked a Mother Earth vibe with her gauze-y dresses and barefoot performances, the light lake breeze and comfortable temperature only enhanced each hair toss and pirouette as she sprinted from side to side on the stage at HBP at Northerly Island. With the skyline behind her and Lake Michigan lightly lapping, she torn through radio staples like “Hunger,” “Ship To Wreck” and “Dog Days Are Over” as the skies bled red, purple and orange. A fitting and reassuring reminder that summer will eventually arrive, and its soundtrack will be as delicious as its colors.
