From a massive stage situated in the outfield of Wrigley Field, the Foo Fighters Dave Grohl declared, “If it wasn’t for this city, I wouldn’t be here right now!” His reference dates back some 30 years, when his cousin put an admittedly green, suburban Grohl on an “el” train from Evanston to the front door of the Cubby Bear to see the beloved Chicago band Naked Raygun. Oddly enough, the considerably smaller venue resides directly across the street from where the Foo Fighters played the 45,000 seat venue this past Saturday. Ever the gracious host, Grohl invited the band to be one of three Chicago based acts to open for “the only stadium show we’ve ever sold-out!” The bill was rounded out by Urge Overkill and Cheap Trick. Sporadic rain showers certainly dampened, but never dismayed concert goers from enjoying nearly five and a half hours of live music that spanned across, arguably, the four generations in attendance. IE’s Curt Baran donned an oversized garbage bag, braved the elements and captured a Friendly Confines filled with leather biker jackets and multi-colored mohawks.
