Stage Buzz: Royal Blood @ Metro

| June 1, 2015

The drums on “Out Of The Black” sound like an arriving thunderstorm. Then comes the impossibly huge guitar (or, more specifically, bass) fuzz,  and a squall of distortion that hits like a car crash. And that’s only the first thirty seconds of the first track!  Worthing, England’ s Royal Blood (bassist/singer Mike Kerr, and drummer Ben Thatcher) demand your attention and are going to get it with or without your permission. Since it’s release in late 2014, their self-titled debut has slowly gathered acolytes one pair of ears at time.

Oh, and the aforementioned cacophony…it’s somehow produced by just Mike and Ben.

Yup, Royal Blood create a melodic maelstrom as a duo. When your numbers are that small, there’s no where to hide, which means you better have the songs in your back pocket. No problem. “Figure It Out” has a heaviness that should be blasting out of a rusty Camaro banked in a Burger King parking lot and “Little Monster” would-be-the-roll-down-the-windows-and-obliterate-the-speed-limit anthem of the summer in a perfect world.

With no shortage of high profile gigs already in their rearview mirror, the duo hit Metro Wednesday (June 3) for a show that sold out rapid fashion. Clubs and smaller theater shows might also become a part of their past in the very near future. They play baseball stadiums later this summer as support for Foo Fighters. Pretty sweet for a couple of seemingly unassuming noisemakers from Worthing.

– Curt Baran
