Stage Buzz: Carbon Tigers
For a lesson in Midwestern bootstrapping, look no farther than Chicagoland shoegazers Carbon Tigers, the Columbia College alumni who built their band from the ground up despite typical blitzes of bad indie-rock weather — empty shows, emptier coffers — only to have their $25,000 vanful of musical equipment filched off a side street in Uptown. (Whoops!) Luckily, Carbon Tigers aren’t your typical pack of Millennials. When any other band of fickle post-collegiates would’ve called it quits and buckled down on those grad school apps, these ever-devout space-rockers took the next most-Millennial route: an online crowdsourcing campaign. Two months and ten grand later, Carbon Tigers were back on the road (and in the studio) with fresh gear in tow. The result is a much-matured sound and, most recently, the band’s self-released sophomore EP, The Wars at Home — five atmospheric anthems that date Carbon Tigers well beyond their years both sonically and psychically. Catch the guys (and that shiny new gear) at Beat Kitchen this Friday.
