Stage Buzz: Elephant Stone

| November 30, 2012

Montreal natives, Elephant Stone sound like they’d be right at home in the psychedelic ’60s with its self-titled sophomore album (due out on Feb. 5, 2013 on Hidden Pony). The album pushes together indie rock, surf, and traditional Indian beats and vocals to produce an interesting amalgamation of sounds that could use its own record store section labeled Hindi-rock. Sought-after sitarist (yep, it’s a commodity) and bassist Rishi Dhir formed the band in 2009. Through his mad skills and mellow direction, we get gnarly guitar riffs intermingled with traditional sitar sounds on “The Sea Of Your Mind” and on a fast-paced “Sally Go Round The Sun.”  Elephant Stone excels on tracks like “A Silent Moment” where its traditional roots trump current trends. The potential here is palpable. (Saturday@Beat Kitchen with Secret Colours.)
