Quick! Get Scotland Yard Gospel Choir down to Corduroy’s! Petticoat, Petticoat have a hand in their jar!
We’ve already debated their name to death in the IE office, resulting in soliloquies extending far beyond how it’s a dead giveaway for their college sound (really, could the venue name be a more obvious choice?). The core of this Lexington, Kentucky quintet isn’t quite so twee to be bedwetting on *Every Mother’s Child (Kalmia), though the bum-da-bums and finger snaps intercepting “Redevelop” will make you want to climb over the backseat and watch the road from the back of the station wagon. In someone else’s hands “We’re Gonna Be Poor” would be a hell of a country song and “White Love” tackles more conventional boy/girl indie pop, but with Belle & Sebastian seeking fields of pop(py), someone has to take the edge off of grad school.
