Guacamolina
Former Argentine comedienne pixie’s third proper LP relies less on loops yet meanders all the same.
More folksy by comparison, Juana Molina’s Son keeps her streak of claustrophobic folk albums intact. While most of her electronic textures this time remain in the background, the endless series of circular acoustic patterns (“La Verdad”) laps itself so much it becomes dizzying. Its predecessor was perhaps less accessible, but it seemed to challenge itself at every turn. Son never really gets out of the gate, and though the percussion on “Micael” and “No Seás Antipatica” sate nerves temporarily, they reveal no more about Molina’s talents than she’s willing to let escape. The final track, “Hay Que Ver Si Voy,” arrives with tropical bounce but proves too little, too late.
