While our press copy didn’t have detailed enough info to tell us who played when, at various points throughout Painted Tiles there are visits by Jim Becker (Califone), Leroy Bach (Wilco), Doug McCombs (Tortoise), Dianne Izzo, and about a half-dozen more. Her hushed voice greets the nine tracks with a shy wave, whether loping through “Your Arms” or wiping off a dust jacket on “Distant Town.” Tshilds’ album is the kind of thing that sneaks up on you, but doesn’t say “boo.” She just stands there.
