Charitably, Come
We’ve done this story way too many times: A well-liked, well-known local musician is blind-sided by some sort of medical emergency — be it disease or accident — that leaves him laid up in a hospital. And because he’s a working musician, there is no health insurance.
But on a good note, we usually write those stories because the result is a benefit concert to help said musician with mounting costs. Joe Camarillo (Waco Brothers, Hushdrops) has mounting costs. The drummer (above, left) was in a serious auto accident recently but is expected to recover, physically. Financially might be a different story, though, and that’s why the good folks at Hideout are hosting The Joe Show on Monday, June 5th. The lineup includes The Waco Brothers, Nora O’Connor, Two Of Us (featuring Camarillo’s Hushdrop partner John San Juan), and the debut of The KatJonBand, which comprises Jon Langford and Kat from Dutch punks The Ex. Admission will cost ya $10, and all the money goes directly to Camarillo.
We weren’t lying when we said how good the folks at Hideout are. The two days before The Joe Show the venue will be helping another great cause, while also celebrating the career of one of Chicago’s most influential musicians. The Curtis Mayfield Birthday Celebration takes place Saturday, June 3rd with a number of musicians, including Kelly Hogan, O’Connor, Andy Hopkins, Liam Davis, and Bobby Conn to name a few, paying tribute to Mayfield’s legacy. Two sets – one at 8 p.m. and the other at 10 – are scheduled, both of which will benefit Housing Opportunities For Women, an organization that helps Chicago’s homeless women and children. All proceeds ($20 cover) will go toward H.O.W. The following day at noon there will be another HOW benefit show, this one for the youngsters. The Blisters, Super Stolie, Jeanie B! And The Jelly Beans, and TWL will play the all-ages show. Adult tickets are $10, kids are $5, and children younger than five-years old get in free.
When we think blues music, we think Fall Out Boy. That’s why we were so excited to find out FOB’s Patrick Stump will be one of the performers at 12: A Tribute To 12-Bar Blues. Presented by the Chicago Chapter of the Recording Academy and hosted at Buddy Guy’s Legends, the concert will also feature performances by Billy Branch, Ronnie Baker Brooks, the Cathy Richardson Band, Eddie Clearwater, Divebar, Michael McDermott, Michael Miles, Keri Noble, The Sideruners, Justin Sconza, and Kat Parsons. Non-Academy members can buy standing-room tickets for $30 through Ticketmaster; all tickets include the pre-concert reception. Proceeds will support the Chicago Chapter’s music advocacy, education, and development programs. Visit www.grammy.com/chicago for more information.
