Voxtrot CD Review

Voxtrot
Mothers, Sisters, Daughters & Wives
(Cult Hero)

Voxtrot’s second EP is a short blast of upright power pop, deceptively encased in blocky piano chords and lovelorn sincerity.

While it’s difficult to hold back the praise and call Austin’s Voxtrot the 2006 Cat’s Pajamas, Mothers, Sisters, Daughters & Wives parlays surefire Taupin/John pomp pop into delicious indie nuggets. Lyrically nothing to write home about but taciturn enough not to get in the way, core member Ramesh Srivastrava still makes his vocal melodies as integral to the five songs as the guitars, drums, pianos, violins . . . whatever’s at his disposal. Granted, lobbing quintuplets of songs is an easy way around having to say something grand or tie much of anything together on a full album, but for now these are good enough to tie one on to. Pop the champagne!
