Rye Coalition
Curses
(Gern Blandsten)

Dave Grohl-produced outing features the tireless Foo’s affinity for muscular man rock. Label home of Mooney Suzuki? You’re kidding!

Since a good portion of Curses sounds nearly identical to Foo Fighters’ last two rock records, I’m not sure Grohl was the best choice big name to attach to the project. Veteran Jersey rockists Rye Coalition are trying to turn a page on the album, and have asked for too much assistance. “Young Yellers” might be reminiscent of Ted Nugent in the ’70s — as opposed to those golden Damn Yankees years — and there’s the matter of “Clutch The Pearls”‘ main riff mimicking Mötley Crüe’s “Live Wire,” but nothing can disguise the big ol’ tongue in Grohl’s cheek. Making matters worse, drummer David Anthony Leto has no where near the chops, making me wonder if he and Grohl would have been better off switching roles. Curses!
