Home turf for early punk rock wasn’t limited to London and New York. In Australia, the Saints were setting the standard. Notably, the band’s first recorded output predates the Sex Pistols, the Damned, and the Clash. Founded in 1973 by Ed Kuepper, Ivor Hay, and the late Chris Bailey as Kid Galahad and the Eternals, the band blasted through Brisbane pubs on its way to becoming the group that would release the seminal I’m Stranded and Eternally Yours in 1977. Kuepper will bring his buzzsaw guitar alongside Hay’s thundering drums to the Metro next week. Kuepper and Hay are traveling with a high-octane lineup dubbed The Saints ’73-’78 that includes singer Mark Arm of Mudhoney, keyboardist/guitarist Mick Harvey of the Bad Seeds, and bassist Peter Oxley of Sunnyboys. In addition to the first two albums, the set will also draw from 1978’s explosive Prehistoric Sounds and related singles and EPs. This will be the first time Kuepper and Hay will perform the material from the first three Saints albums in North America. A Saints lineup with Hay and Bailey last performed at the Metro in 1987. On Tuesday, November 11, expect fiery fare including debut single “(I’m) Stranded,” “This Perfect Day,” “Messin’ with the Kid,” and the brass-driven frequent Midnight Oil cover “Know Your Product.” (metrochicago.com) – Jeff Elbel
