Billy Idol somehow continues to rage against the dying of the light. Hard living and a serious motorcycle accident should have snuffed him out some time ago, yet here he is, still standing like punk rock’s version of Keith Richards.
As he approaches his 70th birthday, his musical biography remains undeniable. He fronted the punk bands Chelsea and Generation X in the 1970s, then parlayed that into massive commercial success in the 1980s as his star rose during the MTV era.
So could this finally be the end? Well, if so, William Michael Albert Broad (Idol’s actual name) wants to leave it all on the road. He recently released his 9th album, Dream Into It, and is currently on tour with the same name. His recent stop at Tinley Park was a successful reminder of what a storied career it has been.
Alongside his long time foil, guitarist Steve Stevens, Idol ripped through a tight, 16 song set that, of course, included rock radio staples like “Rock The Cradle Of Love,” “Rebel Yell,” “Eyes Without a Face,” “Flesh For Fantasy,” “Hot In The City,” and the now ubiquitous “White Wedding.” Arguably, one might say this is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame resume. Well, Cleveland felt much the same way, placing him on the 2025 ballot.
