The Lone Bellow
The Salt Shed
Chicago, IL March 9, 2025
Recap and photos by Curt Baran
Sunday evening’s Salt Shed show felt rooted in the past with a sharp eye to the future. Although you could say the evening’s official headliner was Morgan Wade, it certainly seemed like the evening belonged to The Lone Bellow as well.
Ms. Wade has been plying her trade for close to a decade now. The Obsessed tour has the perfect blend of country integrity mixed with the occasional bombast of straight-ahead rock & roll, specifically the two set openers “Total Control” and “Time To Love, Time To Kill.”
Comparatively, The Lone Bellow now seems like village elders. The New York trio has been at it for close to two decades and, unlike Morgan Wade, drives in a more traditional musical
direction that lends itself to folk and jug bands. That’s not to infer that they are unable to kick up their share of dust. When they locked into a musical groove, the sound seemed as heavy as Ms. Wade’s. It’s the trick no one tells you: if your delivery with acoustic instruments is tourniquet-tight, you’ll end up sounding as loud as an arena band. On this particular evening, both acts could often sound as if they were whispering through a megaphone.
