The crossover between the Pop and Country genres of music is certainly not new, but it’s hard not to be impressed when someone like Kacey Musgraves executes it so effortlessly. Her performance this past week at Rosemont, Illinois’ Allstate Arena was a masterclass in understatement, delivering the biggest of yields.
As part of her “Deeper Well” tour – supporting her 2024 release of the same name-Musgraves delivered an evening that found her seamlessly winding her way through a now extensive catalog of hits (“Rainbow”) crowd pleasers (“Follow Your Arrow,” “Slow Burn” and “Golden Hour”) and new material (“Cardinal,” “The Architect” and “Deeper Well”). She even worked in a bit of Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club,” quickly achieving the exalted status of everyone’s go-to cover song.
And she delivered it all with her absolutely genuine “awe-shucks” and “yee-haw” vibe, which got married to a cowboy boot-cloaked, cosmopolitan message of inclusiveness and promotion of individuality that never felt forced or overbearing. The message was there in the songs, and her performance sold it, using the music as the most valuable form of currency.
