Day One (Part One)
Grant Park
Chicago, Il
Recap and photos by Curt Baran
It’s the time of year in Chicago when the big dog comes and lays on the city’s front lawn. Lollapalooza returned to Grant Park this past weekend and brought with it a performance that will prove to be historic. The mere mention of this town’s largest outdoor festival brought with it an immediate discussion of Chappell Roan. After a series of iconic performances, the native from Willard, Missouri, has seen a meteoric rise in her career, and Lollapalooza’s timing could not have been better. Her 5:00 stage time, originally booked on one of the smaller stages, had to be moved to the largest stage on the park’s south end to accommodate what has been estimated as one of the largest crowds to see a Lollapalooza act. She easily could have headlined Day 1. There were plenty of other musical options as well, including Matt Hansen, Mette, Blondshell, Tyla, Goldie Boutilier, Sam Barber, D4VD, Olivia Dean, Kesha (who was gracious enough to switch stages with Roan to accommodate the audience), Labrinth, Benson Boone, and the evening’s closer Hozier. The city also dodged a meteorological event known as the “Ring Of Fire.” (Google it, I had to…)
