Phoebe Bridgers swept back into town in a sold-out show powering her momentum. When she last played Chicago, her rapidly rising star found her headlining Night One of the 2021 Pitchfork Music Festival, a pretty big flex in and of itself at that juncture in her career. But on a Saturday evening along the city’s lakefront, the West Coast native was greeted by some 30,000 fans there specifically to see her. Still touring behind her brilliant 2020 release Punisher, Bridgers’ set list drew heavily from that release, with attendees shouting back every word at her.
What was noticeably different this time around was that she seemed less astonished by her success and has settled comfortably into herself as a performer. At one point during the evening, she broke down the fourth wall hard, stepping off the stage to hold hands with a fan on the rail. The astonished concertgoer, and those surrounding her, reveled in the connection as the rest of the house fought back tears.
