Oh did the heaviness arrive in Uptown on Thursday night! Metal stalwarts Mastodon and Opeth have teamed up for a co-headlining tour that recently touched down at Chicago’s Riviera Theatre. Atlanta’s Mastodon took the direct approach by simply pummeling attendees into submission with bludgeoning riffs and deafening volume. Dig deep though, and you’ll find tunefulness under the mercury-heavy murk.

Sweden’s Opeth played it differently. Their songs stretch themselves out slowly, sometimes encroaching the ten-minute mark. But it’s no less effective than their tour cohorts’ execution. When the songs swell to the Metal version of the beat drop, the immensity of the moment is immeasurable.

Denver, Colorado’s Khemiss got the devil horns flying early as openers.
