Lorde’s Solar Power tour arrived in Chicago this past weekend for two shows at the city’s acoustically perfect Chicago Theatre. The New Zealand native used the building’s interior to her advantage, going from a whisper to a scream and all points in between. Her setlist pulled heavily from her 2021 release that shares its name with the current sojourn and each song was greeted with an uproarious ovation. “If you’re here, it means I still fit…thank you for keeping me in your lives” she proclaimed at one point during the evening.

Although her songs lean heavily on matters of the heart and how those feelings relate to relationships, there’s no denying they also serve as a powerful metaphor for the connection between her and her audience. During “Liability,” an absolute highlight of an evening filled with them, she sang “The truth is a toy that people enjoy/‘Til all the tricks don’t work no more/Then they get bored of me.” The entirety of this particular Friday evening was all evidence to the contrary.
