Slayer made the last “area” appearance ever (after their Riot Fest appearance in September), and the Quad Cities (Moline, IL) got the honors. They brought a “cast of thousands” with them, including Philip H. Anselmo And The Illegals, who started the evening with a complete set of Pantera.
The house PA was blaring Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” as Ministry took the stage, and “Uncle Al” Jourgensen and the boys played a killer set that included Black Sabbath’s “Supernaut,” but set closer “Jesus Built My Hot Rod” was the night’s highlight.
With the clock winding down, Primus proved why they fit this bill. When one thinks of Primus, odds are they don’t think ‘thrash’ or even heavy metal. Either way, it worked! You just turn up the volume and let Les Claypool’s bass do the work. Primus fans were thrilled with the setlist powered by Rush’s “Cygnus X-1” as the night’s real surprise.
The night was all about Slayer, who threw a retirement party for the ages. As expected, they played an inspired setlist while turning their pyro up to 11. Sadly all legendary bands call it a day, but through their manager they have hinted that Slayer may continue releasing music, but not a live tour. As KISS and Motley Crue can attest, sometimes plans change.
It all wraps up for Slayer in Los Angeles on November 30.
