Photo Gallery Pitchfork Music Festival 2019 – Day One

| July 22, 2019

As the 2019 version of the Pitchfork Music Festival was getting ready to launch in Chicago’s Union Park, the chatter should have been about the music. But like R.E.M. who once begged the question, “should we talk about the weather?,” that’s precisely what was on everyone’s lips. The weekend started under an Extreme Heat Warning with “feels like” temps hovering around 110 degrees with suffocating humidity.

Fortunately, Pitchfork organizers were proactive: water was distributed for free, misting tents were erected and the CTA parked buses on site to be used as makeshift cooling stations. The mindset would eventually shift to the music, but mere survival always felt close at hand. Day one featured headliners HAIM, playing, save for a west coast warm up date, their only scheduled show this year. Other performers included Low, Mavis Staples, Soccer Mommy, Pusha-T, Julia Holter, Earl Sweatshirt, Sky Ferreira, Grapetooth, Valee, Rico Nasty, Standing On The Corner, MIKE and Great Black Music Ensemble. And meteorological suppression be damned, the people came to listen.
