Anderson Paak and Thundercat at Huntington Bank Pavilion on Northerly Island
Oxnard’s Anderson Paak brought his “Best Teef In The Game” tour to Northerly Island this past week and made the lakefront jump. The multi-talented singer/songwriter/producer/rapper/Grammy nominated wunderkind then proceeded to administer a clinic on how to entertain. Paak preened, spun, sang and rapped his way into the dusk.
He even took his drum set-which sat atop what felt like a two-story, video screened two-flat-out for occasional joy rides. But strip away the ancillary bread and circuses, the enormous production values and a cracking live band, and Paak still would have wowed. His talent and those aforementioned “Best Teef,” which fuel his megawatt smile, still would have carried the evening.
Chicago’s own NoName (who did not allow photographers to shoot her set, thus her exclusion from the gallery) and the funk/R&B fusion of Thundercat, who served as openers, got asses out of the seats and into an orbit as the sun slid down the horizon.
