Stage Buzz: The Smart Studios Story @ Music Box & Metro
Chicago International Movies & Music Festival, aka CIMMFest, a four day showcase of films, concerts, and industry panels – is back for 2016. This year’s line-up could be their best yet, highlighted by the Godfather of Hip-Hop Afrika Bambaataa at Promontory, Local H celebrating the 20th Anniversary of As Good as Dead at Metro and Honeyboy Edwards Tribute at Rosa’s. Visit cimmfest.org for details and tickets.
Perhaps the most anticipated CIMM film on our bucket list is the The Smart Studios Story which the tells the backstory of the legendary Madison,WI recording studio where Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage, Poster Children and dozens of other ’80s and 90s alt-rock heavyweights created vital music at the recording facility founded by Butch Vig and Steve Marker. The film features never-before-seen archival footage, in depth interviews with musicians and producers, and a mighty soundtrack.
The Smart Studios Story reveals the pivotal Midwest link to the global rise of 1990s alternative rock and the unassuming Madison, Wisconsin recording studio at its center. The Music Box Theatre hosts the Middle America screening tomorrow Wednesday of the film (including a Q&A with Butch Vig, Steve Marker and director Wendy Schneider). Metro hosts the Smart Studios after party for only $10, tickets via metrochicago.com.
