Stage Buzz: Vic and Gab

Vic and Gab by Shervin Lainez_0

We’re willing to forgive sister-sister indie pop duo Victoriah and Hannah Gabriela Banuelos (Vic And Gab) for their uncanny resemblance to another not-so-creatively-dubbed sister-sister indie pop duo (rhymes with Schmeegan and Schmara). As is the case with any web search-worthy basement act today, the Banuelos are off the hook not because they haven’t stolen, but because they’ve stolen well. While Vic and Gab have clearly hijacked Calgary’s foremost twin stars’ sunny-sad pop, they’ve hijacked it for the better (or at least recycled it for a younger generation). The Milwaukee-transplant Texans’ debut LP, Love of Mine – a likely nod to the sisters’ beloved Ben Gibbard – is dreamy and understated and littered with winning imperfections (see: “Let Me Down,” equal parts catchiness and metrical slop). Though the Banuelos are unsigned as of yet, recent testimonials from SPIN and A.V. Club suggest the world is quickly catching on. Make like a college kid: hop the Purple Line to Evanston and watch next-big-thing Vic and Gab in a hundred-person room while you still can. You’ll be thankful for the bragging rights down the line.
