Stage Buzz: Cobrafest 2013
If there’s one type of event that epitomizes hipsterdom, it’s the afterparty. As a generation persistently worried that we’re missing out on something – the next big thing – Millennials go wobbly-kneed at sweet whispers of some place sleeker, cooler, up-and-coming. It should come as no surprise, then, that Cobra Lounge‘s three-night Pitchfork Fest afterparty, Cobrafest, will be crawling with sunburned chicsters trying to defer their bedtimes. That’s not to say that Cobrafest’s lineup isn’t wholly worth stopping by (especially at the agreeable price of nada – with a reservation). Friday’s bill features Thing, Habibi, and The People’s Temple opening for L.A. hardcore-punkers The Bronx; Saturday will see Growlers, another West Coast rock act, with support from Denny & The Jets and Toxie; and on Sunday, Cobrafest comes to a close with neo-folk singer-songwriter King Dude, supported by White Mystery, Rainbow Gun Show, and Nones. Bottom line: If you find yourself leaving this year’s Pitchfork somehow unsatisfied by Joanna Newsom, Björk, or Belle & Sebastian, consider strolling by Cobra Lounge. You can bet a handful of other wanderlusting festies will have done the same. (Friday through Sunday@Cobra Lounge.)
